The Faulty Plum was founded in 2006 by San Francisco singer-songwriter Eric Maskol. Eric is the group's only official member, and the supporting band currently consists of a small group of top-tier Bay Area musicians. The band plays electro-acoustic rock music with moody lyrics, often over a swing beat, dubbed "apocalyptic shuffle". Eric writes and records the music at his home studio, usually playing the instruments himself.
Eric grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia and moved to San Francisco in 1998. He has self-released a number of CDs under various pseudonyms, generally home-recorded. He has performed extensively around San Francisco and Los Angeles, and has toured the West Coast as an acoustic solo artist.
Musicians who have performed or recorded with The Faulty Plum include:
• Eric Maskol - guitar, vocals
• Alex Goddard - guitar, backing vocals
• Olive Mitra - bass
• Tony Patel-Dunn - drums
• Daniel Fabricant - bass
• Krystle Jones - backing vocals
• Shaye Troha - backing vocals
• Justin Frahm - piano, backing vocals
"The Faulty Plum's musical sensibility combines the effortless chops of a guy who's been playing music for the entirety of his adult life with the pop freshness of a young vision. Some of their songs, replete with driving, hooky guitar, by turns wistful and accusing lyrics, and simple heartbeat drums, may remind you of Donovan or the Beatles; and some songs, overlaid with chiming, plangent tones, tambourine, and falsetto backing vocals, bring to mind Echo and the Bunnymen and XTC . But there's nothing sycophantic or overtly retro about The Faulty Plum's music, it's more like they've absorbed and reinterpreted what we love about blues and pop to produce quirky, impeccably arranged gems that are catchy, warm, and vibrant."
